Personal Care and Service Occupations

This group includes workers who attend to clients' beauty, fitness, and other needs.

Overall employment in personal care and service occupations is projected to grow 14 percent over the next ten years, much faster than the average for all occupations; this increase is expected to result in about 544,800 new jobs over the decade. In addition to new jobs from growth, opportunities arise from the need to replace workers who leave their occupations permanently. About 762,600 openings each year, on average, are projected to come from growth and replacement needs.

Personal care and service occupations have a median annual wage of $29,450, which is lower than the median annual wage for all occupations of $45,760.

Animal Care and Service Workers

Animal care and service workers attend to or train animals. Working with pets and other nonfarm animals, these caretakers and trainers feed, groom, and exercise the animals or teach them to respond to human commands.

Barbers, Hairstylists, and Cosmetologists

Barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists provide haircutting, hairstyling, and a range of other beauty services.

Childcare Center Directors

Preschool and childcare center directors supervise and lead their staffs, design program plans, oversee daily activities, and prepare budgets. They are responsible for all aspects of their center’s program.

Childcare Workers

Childcare workers attend to children's needs while helping to foster early development. They may help younger children prepare for kindergarten or assist older children with homework.

Fitness Trainers and Instructors

Fitness trainers and instructors lead, instruct, and motivate individuals or groups in exercise activities, including cardiovascular workouts (for the heart and blood circulation), strength training, and stretching. They work with people of all ages and skill levels.

Funeral Service Workers

Funeral service workers organize and manage the details of a ceremony honoring a deceased person.

Gambling Services Workers

Gambling services workers serve customers in gambling establishments, such as casinos or racetracks. These workers tend slot machines or deal cards, take bets or pay out winnings, and supervise or manage gambling workers and operations.

Home Health Aides and Personal Care Aides

Home health and personal care aides monitor the condition of people with disabilities or chronic illnesses and help them with daily living activities. They often help older adults who need assistance.

Manicurists and Pedicurists

Manicurists and pedicurists clean, shape, and beautify fingernails and toenails.

Recreation Workers

Recreation workers design and lead activities to help people stay active, improve fitness, and have fun. They work with groups in summer camps, fitness and recreational sports centers, nursing care facilities, nature parks, and other settings.

Skincare Specialists

Skincare specialists cleanse and beautify the face and body to enhance a person's appearance.

Costume Attendants

Costume Attendants select, fit, and take care of costumes for cast members, and aid entertainers. May assist with multiple costume changes during performances.

Funeral Attendants perform a variety of tasks during funerals, such as placing caskets in the parlor or chapel prior to services, arranging floral offerings or lights around caskets, directing or escorting mourners, closing caskets, and issuing and storing funeral equipment.

Locker Room, Coatroom, and Dressing Room Attendants

Locker Room, Coatroom, and Dressing Room Attendants provide personal items to patrons or customers in locker rooms, dressing rooms, or coatrooms.

Makeup Artists (Theatrical and Performance)

Makeup Artists apply makeup to performers to reflect the period, setting, and situation of their roles.

Motion Picture Projectionists

Motion Picture Projectionists set up and operate motion picture projection and related sound reproduction equipment.

Shampooers

Shampooers shampoo and rinse customers' hair.

Tour Guides and Escorts

Tour Guides and Escorts escort individuals or groups on sightseeing tours or through places of interest, such as industrial establishments, public buildings, and art galleries.

Ushers, Lobby Attendants, and Ticket Takers

Ushers, Lobby Attendants, and Ticket Takers assist patrons at entertainment events by collecting admission tickets and passes from patrons, assisting in finding seats, searching for lost articles, and locating rest rooms and telephones.
